THE UNITED Kingdom will finally leave the European Union this coming Friday at 11pm, and in this special edition of Twenty Minute Topic, WE pay tribute to those eurosceptics who campaigned for Brexit, but sadly did not live long enough to see it delivered.

Among those Marcus and Greg pay tribute to are Norris McWhirter, perhaps best known for his role on long-running children’s TV programme Record Breakers, Labour politicians Peter Shore and Tony Benn, as well as Greg’s friend Christopher Booker, the campaigning journalist who died last year.

Marcus and Greg could not possibly pay tribute to everyone who did their bit, but this podcast gives a brief insight into just some of the great characters who helped make Brexit happen.

We mentioned Hugh Gaitskell’s magnificent speech, made to the Labour Party Conference of 1962 by the man I believe to have been their last Leader of competence integrity and note, explaining why joining, what was then called The EUropean Economic Community or Common Market, was a dangerous folly!

With regard to Enoch Powell’s speech on the floor of The House of Commons made on 25-Feb-1970 – as with so many of his excellent, erudite, informative and all too prescient speeches, not only with razor sharp accuracy using the full gamut of the English language and Classical history but doubtless presented without any notes!

Also I believe we should remember the efforts, courage and price paid by Nikki Sinclaire to achieve BreXit and for those in the know they will be aware that it was she who, despite constant attacks by aspects of the Farage Cult and collusion within his UKip followers she faced a Court case that tried to destroy her in defence of remaining in the EU for their personal aggrandisement!

Without Nikki’s tenacity and personal efforts, the Petition of 1/4 Million signatures demanding a House of Commons debate on IN/OUT of the EU would not have taken place, and Cameron’s Government would not have been forced to write the promise into their manifesto and deliver the Referendum that delivered BreXit – despite the corrupt MPs and the utterly shameful creep John Bercow who did all they could to destroy Britain’s democratic process, for their personal gain!
